The Cisco Loboes had not lost a district football game in 61 games, until Friday night in Coleman when the Bluecats protected the home turf in a big way 31-7. Cisco entered the game #4 in the Harris Ratings Weekly while Coleman was #8. Bet things change when the new rankings come out early next week.
"The kids believed in themselves. Everybody in our locker room believed we could do this. That's what their goal was, that was their mindset and that's what they did," said Head Coach John Elder after the game.
He pointed to a stingy Bluecat defense that allowed only 7 points Friday night with a bend but not break effort all night long.
"Hats off to Coach Thompson and his defense, to Coach Edington and the game plan he put on. These guys worked hard and these kids with their heart and desire and everything for the Bluecat Nation. It's really a group win and I'm very proud of these kids," Elder said.
The Bluecats struck first with 4:13 left in the 1st quarter on a 32 yard field goal by Christian Villeda. The next Bluecat score came late in the first quarter when Jadin Jackson aired out a 50 yard pass to a wide open Cort McFadden. Villeda added the extra point giving Coleman a 10-0 lead. The next score also belonged to Coleman, a 62 yard touchdown run down the home sideline by Jadin Jackson. Villeda's extra point was true and Coleman lead 17-0. The only Cisco score was a 1 yard run by Hunter Long in the last minute of the first half. Longoria kicked the extra point. The score at halftime was Coleman 17 Cisco 7.
The Bluecats took the second half kickoff but failed to cleanly field the ball resulting in Cisco taking over at the Coleman 27. The Bluecat defense came up big denying a 4th and 7 pass play to get the ball back on downs. The Bluecats would score again when Jadin Jackson scampered into the end zone on a 1 yard run. The extra point kick was no good making the score Coleman 23, Cisco 7. The final score of the game came at 7:40 left in the 4th quarter when Ryland Gentry scored on a 3 yard run. The Bluecats then completed a pass from Jackson to Braxton Smith for two points to give Coleman their 31-7 victory.
The Bluecats also recovered two Cisco fumbles and both recoveries were by David Navarro #55. Both recoveries resulted in Bluecat scores.
Coleman remains undefeated at 7-0, 3-0 in district as they travel to San Saba next Friday night for a meeting with the Armadillos. San Saba defeated De Leon 45-14 Friday night. In other district action, Goldthwaite defeated Winters 49-13.
Love ya Blue!
