The Coleman Bluekatts took game 1 from the Ozona Lady Lions on Friday night in Forsan. The Katts scored 8 runs in the 4th inning to go ahead after Ozona took an early lead of 4-1. After Coleman had scored 2, making it 4-3 with Ozona still ahead, Brooklyn Gilbreath stepped up and hit a double tying the game at 4. The Katts only had 1 out, but the rain was heavy; the Ozona pitcher struggled with control, and Coleman took advantage of the situation. Aislyn Cox came up to bat with bases loaded and 1 out. She was walked and a run was also walked in. (5-4 Coleman ahead) With the bases still loaded Raelie Robinson was hit by a pitch, walking in Brooklyn Gilbreath (6-4). Haylee West was walked bringing in Brylei Gilbreath (7-4) and Mia Watson was hit by a pitch, bringing in Cox (8-4). At this point Ozona stopped the game for a pitching change, but Ipsha Bhatka singled off of her to center field and got an RBI, making the score 9-4. Ozona finally got the 2nd and 3rd outs and closed out the 4th inning. The rain had been heavy and towels were brought out of the dugout to try to keep the ball dry for pitching, but it was difficult at best.
When Coleman went onto the field and Aislyn Cox came to the mound to pitch, the rain let up a little. The first batter, Villarreal, hit to Cox, who fielded it and threw to first for OUT #1. Flores then singled to center field, but was kept at first. Garza was struck out by Cox. Oglesby popped up and Brooklyn Gilbreath caught it for OUT #3, keeping Ozona scoreless for the first time in the game.
With the score 9-4 going into the bottom of the 5th, Coleman went to work at the plate. McKeehan singled, and stole second while Brooklyn Gilbreath was at bat. Gilbreath's popup was caught by Ozona's Castro. While Brylie G. was at bat, McKeehan stole third. Brylei then got a hit and made it to first. Cox hit past the short stop for a double, scoring McKeehan and advancing Brylei G. to third. Still with one out, Robinson tripled to right field scoring Brylei and Cox. (Coleman was up 12-4) West hit a ball to left field which was caught for an out; however, Robinson ran and beat the throw home for another run. (13-4 with 2 outs) Mia Watson was hit by a pitch for the 2nd time. Bhatka was walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd, but the next batter was struck out to retire the side.
Ahead 13-4 going into the top of the 6th, Coleman's defense was ready to work. However, Ozona's Webb came up to bat and hit a HOME RUN over the 209 foot fence. (13-5) That took the wind out of Cox, and the rain was coming down heavy again. She walked the next batter. Ozona's Garza then hit to Bhatka at short stop, who fielded it and pitched it to second to get the lead runner out. Garza was on first, replaced by a pinch runner. Cox got Rodriguez to a full count, but walked her and Ozona had runners on first and third. Castillo came up to bat and hit the ball down the third base line and left fielder Brylei Gilbreath threw the ball back in, but not before two more runs had scored. (13-7 Coleman still up) Cox struck Villarreal out, then Flores hit to first base and was out ending their at bat.
In the bottom of the 6th McKeehan hit to the short stop who fielded it, but the throw pulled the 1st baseman off the bag and McKeehan was safe. Brooklyn G. popped up for Out #1. Brylei G. hit over the short stop, but the center fielder caught it for Out #2. McKeehan stole second with Cox at bat. Then Cox hit one to the short stop who bobbled it, allowing Cox to get to first base and McKeehan to third. Robinson hit to the pitcher who threw the ball back to the catcher to tag McKeehan, but the catcher dropped the ball. McKeehan scored making it 14-7. While Haylee West was at bat a throw to third base got by and Cox scored, 15-7. West swung on the 3rd strike, but the ball got past the catcher and West beat the throw to first base. With runners on the corners Watson was hit by a pitch AGAIN, loading the bases. Unfortunately Coleman wasn't able to capitalize on that, leaving three stranded with the 3rd out.
The Lady Lions weren't ready to give it up. They came out in the top of the 7th wanting to hit. Gonzales hit to Robinson, but she fielded it and stepped on the bag for Out #1. Oglesby swung the bat hitting several foul balls, but watched Cox's 3rd strike barely catch the corner of the plate for Out #2. Webb, who had hit a homerun earlier hit the ball to Cox who misjudged the throw to first sending the ball past Robinson. A single brought Webb in for another run making it 15-8. Three batters had gotten by Cox with 2 strikes, just needing 1 more strike to end the game. Cox took control and got the final batter out with a swinging strike out. Game over!
Congratulations to the Bluekatts. The Katts will play Ozona for Game #2 on Saturday at 2:00pm in Forsan again. IF NEEDED, game 3 will follow game 2 after a 30 minutes rest.
