Tom Jones - CISD Hall of Honor Class of 2019

Each week Coleman ISD is highlighting an individual that was inducted into the Coleman ISD Hall of Honor.  This week’s honoree is Tom Jones, CISD Hall of Honor Class of 2019.  The Hall of Honor Banquet will be held February 12, 2022.  

TOM JONES – CISD Hall of Honor Class of 2019

Tom Jones graduated from Coleman High School in 1945.  He graduated from the University of Texas and became a successful songwriter/lyricist.  He is known for hundreds of recordings, notably for “Much More,” “Try to Remember,” “Soon It’s Gonna Rain,” and “They Were You” which he co-authored.  He is known for his most successful work, “The Fantasticks” which opened in 1960 and became the longest running production in the history of the American theatre.  Jones and composer Harvey Schmidt also wrote two successful Broadway shows, “110 in the Shade” and “I Do! I Do!” along with many more notable shows. Mr. Jones received an OBIE Award and the 1992 Special Tony Award for “The Fantasticks.” In 1999, he was inducted into the Broadway Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre, in 2012 he was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and in December of 2017, he received the Oscar Hammerstein Award. His “star” is on the Off Broadway Walk of Fame outside the Lucille Lortel Theatre in New York City, New York.  In 2019, Mr. Jones was residing in Connecticut and at age 91 was working on three new shows.
