Being one of the 14 selected for the TSCRA Roundup was a huge opportunity for me! I am grateful for the chance to learn from others who were selected as well as industry leaders. I had such a great experience chasing my dreams and helping the local communities too! The Roundup not only pertained to cattle, but other aspects of the meat industry as well: from nutrition at HEB, and then turning that into donations to Lubbock Impact, to stuffing weekend bags for Snackpak4kids and hearing about the help they provide local communities. I was able to meet the TCU Ranch Management professors, discuss meat science with WT professors, meet the dean of TSU, and tour the meat lab with TTU’s ag professors. We were able to tour RA Brown Ranch, T-Bar Ranch, Caviness Beef Packers, Cactus Feeders (Wrangler, specifically), and Timber Creek Veterinary Hospital. Timber Creek may have been my favorite spot, mostly because of the famous horses there, but it was good to get the chance to learn about cloning from Dr. Veneklasen again, as I did at TCFA’s Feedlot Technician Program. We were able to gain more knowledge on pasture to plate references and gain professional and personal skills. Each meal we were able to sit down one-on-one with industry leaders who I can’t thank enough for sharing their knowledge with us! The end of the week ended with each of us participating in interviews, giving speeches; where I gave an impromptu speech on how university research is important to agriculture, and another discussion with TCU’s alumni and Ranch Management team. I can’t wait to see where my new knowledge takes me.
