The James Hopper Memorial Scholarship was awarded to three recipients during graduation ceremonies at Panther Creek High School on May 14, 2021. His parents, Loyd and Edwina Hopper presented the awards.

The James Hopper Memorial Scholarship was awarded in the amount of $2,000 to each of the recipients.  Established in 1988 by friends and relatives, this fund honors the memory of James Pernell Hopper, a Panther Creek student who died on December 5, 1987 in a highway crash.  The memorial fund is managed and administered by the Community Foundation of Abilene.  The scholarship is given to a Panther Creek senior and is based on academics, participation. potential and financial need.  The recipients are: 

  • CJ Blick is the son of Lolita Gardner of Talpa, He plans to attend Angelo State University and plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Finance degree.
  • Callie Strickland is the daughter of Shawn and Cheryl Strickland of Coleman.  She will attend Tarleton State University and major in pre-nursing.
  • Sabrina Watson-Lawrence is the daughter of Scotty Lawrence and Jodi Watson both of Coleman.  She will attend Blinn College at the Bryan campus to complete her pre-vet courses then transfer to Texas A&M to complete her degree to become a veterinarian.
